Naître Svetlana Staline
FILM, ANIMATION, DOCUMENTARY, 80 min.
March 2023
Switzerland / France
Naître Svetlana Staline blends archival photography and Dada-style collage against flat, Bauhaus-inflected fields of color — absurdist juxtapositions giving way to stark, Soviet-style geometry, evoking both the monumental and the intimate.

In 1967, at the height of the Cold War, Stalin’s only daughter, Svetlana, walks into the American embassy in New Delhi and asks for asylum — leaving her country and her two children behind. The defection sends shockwaves through East and West alike: panicked, President Johnson hides her in French-speaking Switzerland with a community of nuns. Hunted by the press, the KGB and countless admirers, Svetlana spends the rest of her life fleeing. The destiny of a resolutely free woman, a grain of sand in the machinery of two opposing empires.
